A HAPPY "Charming" NEW YEAR!

Time does fly when we are having fun!
Seems like just yesterday I started my blog, but
it was the Fall of 2011.  I got off to a slow start, but 2012
brought me many wonderful blogging friends.
Thank you for following me, encouraging me, and giving me
reasons to keep blogging about something we love
KWILTING!

On this first day of January, 2013
I want to give something back to you.
It is simple tutorial for making coasters
using 5, 5 in squares "aka" charms.

To be clear, this is NOT my original design and
I don't know who it belongs to or I would give them credit.
A vendor at a quilt show did this demo for hundreds of people
and now I will share it with you.
The photos and words in the tut are my interpretation of that demo.

"Charming Coasters"

Select 5 (5 inch) Charms for each coaster

1 charm for the bottom and
4 charms for the top

Fold the 4 charms for the top in half,
wrong sides together (wst)

Lay the charm for the coaster bottom
RIGHT SIDE side UP

Place the four FOLDED charms (wst)
with raw edges to the outside.
The following photos demonstrate the
placement of the charms for a "woven" look.

First charm on left - raw edges out

Second charm across top - raw edges out

Third charm down right side - raw edges out

Fourth charm across the bottom - raw edges out
tucking it under the First charm
Now all pieces are woven.

Pin if desired before sewing.
Sew 1/4" seam around the entire edge of the square.

Finished edges..look like this.

Check both sides to make sure
ALL fabrics have been sewn into the seams.

Turn the coaster inside out.
I use a chop stick for poking out the corners

Press
This is the finished top of the coaster.

and the finished bottom of the coaster.

Set of 6 Coasters

Hope you try this...they are so fun and easy to make.
This could be your next "quick" Kwilty Pleasure!

I have seen these made up and was told they are easy to do. Thanks for sharing! I have a set of four coasters similar to this and they are round. I need to take one apart to see how they are made!

These are so cute! A swap partner sent me one a long time ago and I'm glad you reminded me of them. Perfect use for a charm pack...

Love the fabric you used. In addition to coasters, I use that method for tissue packets and potholders. So fast and easy to make.

When I make the coasters I add a piece of cotton batting cut 4.5 inches and sew it down to the wrong side of the bottom square before layering the other pieces. It's a little more absorbent using the batting. For the potholders I add a layer of cotton batting and a layer of Insul-Brite.

Happy New Year!

Wonderful tutorial! I've seen these coasters, and even received them as a gift, but never knew how to make them till now. Thank you!

This is such a great idea --and easy to follow tutorial. I made some Christmas coasters, but these are so cute, I think I'll try some for Spring!
